Northern Manitoba from Forest to Tundra : A Canoeing Guide and Wilderness Companion
Published in Paperback by G.B. Communications (09 September, 1995)
Author: Paul M. Gahlinger
Average review score:

Best book about Canada
I always dreamed of going to Canada, especially to do a canoeing trip. But most of the canoeing books I found were too boring or just gave the routes, while the nature books didn't have the travel information. This book is awesome! I loved reading the descriptions and the vignettes, and the sketches are delightful. It provides the cultural and historical information that really brought the trip to life.

I highly recommend it. Perfect as a 'wilderness companion'.

Humorous autiobiographical memories about life
Northern Memories: More High-Spirited Tales Of "Growing Up North" by Jerry Harju is the latest in a series of nostalgic and humorous autiobiographical memories about life, family and community in the snow country of Upper Michigan. Set in the 1930s and 40s, among a family that was short on money but didn't let that get in the way of having fun, Northern Memories is a wondrous look at daily life over half a century ago, with wry humor, enduring sentiment and a deep reverence for snow-covered homeland. Also very highly recommended are Jerry Harju's three previous volumes of personal memoirs: Northern Reflections (North Harbor Publishing, 0967020514), Northern D'Lights (North Harbor Publishing, 0932212816), and Northern Passages (Avery Color Studios, 0932212867).

The Northern Navajo Frontier, 1860-1900: Expansion Through Adversity
Published in Paperback by Utah State University Press (01 October, 2001)
Author: Robert S. McPherson
Average review score:

A welcome addition to Native American history reading lists
Robert McPherson's The Northern Navajo Frontier 1860-1900: Expansion Through Adversity is an amazing and informative examination of how the Navajos successfully defended and expanded their territory in an era when most Native Americans lost their lands. Focusing on the northern frontier borderlands and the "aggressive defensive" used to hold on to them, largely without making war, The Northern Navajo Frontier 1860-1900 is a revealing look at how it is possible for a people to survive even when they are outnumbered and outgunned. The scholarly, college-level text is meticulously researched and preoccupied with truly understanding what was truly happening on the Northern Navajo Frontier and why during the specified period of 40 years. A most fascinating and thought-provoking study, The Northern Navajo Frontier 1860-1900 is an impressive and welcome addition to Native American history reading lists and reference collections.

Northern Passage: American Vietnam War Resisters in Canada

More case studies should have been added.
This is a sociological study of the Americans who emigrated to Canada during the late 1960s and early 1970s. I believe that there is an attempt to draw an analogy with the Americans who chose Peace Corps service during this period of time with those who went to Canada. This is an invalid comparison. American Peace Corps volunteers served in places like Atar, Mauritania; Qandahar, Afghanistan; Bilma, Niger; Kikwit, Zaire; Sarh, Tchad; and Zabol, Iran. Most of the Americans that went to Canada chose to live in southern Onatrio, viz. Toronto. How many went to Lac St. Jean, Quebec or Churchill, Manitoba? Few. These sites would have been partially commensurate with the difficulty of the Peace Corps sites.

Northern Pike

Outstanding General Pike Information
Written by a true gentleman! Tom and his wife were kind enough to dig through their home some years ago to round up some new copies of this book as well as "Walley Fishing Today" for our fishing club. Tom even took time to write dedications into the cover of each of the several books. "Northern Pike" has proven to be the baseline book used by a group of forty men traveling to an upstate New York lake each spring to hunt pike. Since obtaining this title, we (those having the book) have at least doubled our pike catch. We have, over the last 6 years, gotten so good at catching pike utilizing this data that we routinely return 90% of our pike to the water because we are certain to catch plenty more.

Nearly all of the data in the book has proven generic enough for me to use when fishing any of the lakes I frequent across 5 states. I never have a problem finding pike.

I have relied heavily upon this book and shall, as soon as I replace the copy stolen from me, rely on it once more. (no one wants to loan me their copy).

I heartily recommend this book for any fisherman whether novice or veteran.

Northern Reflections: A Lighthearted Account of Growing Up North
Published in Paperback by North Harbor Publishing (November, 2000)

Doubled Over With Laughter
In the introduction to his book "Northern Reflections", Jerry Harju reveals that it's a book about growing up in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in the 1940's and is perhaps most appreciated by those who can identify with that.

While I'm familiar with Upper Michigan and its culture, I did not grow up in the 40's, and still found plenty of good reading here.

If you're new to reading humorous books (as I am), I recommend this one as a great place to start. It's an easy read, comprised of short chapters, each its own story, so you can pick it up, read a chapter, and come back for more later as time permits.

The author's humor has a wonderful way of sneaking up on a person. And just when I thought it couldn't get any funnier, I'd start the next chapter, and before I knew it, I'd find myself doubled over with even greater helpless laughter! Teens may appreciate it, too. From a first job, to dating, to his first car, Jerry covers it all, against the backdrop of small-town life in the rugged climate of northern Michigan.

"Yoopers" (as U.P.'ers are known), especially, should appreciate it; but even if you're not a Yooper, there's still lots to laugh about.

Northern Renaissance Art: Painting, Sculpture, the Graphic Arts from 1350 to 1575

Lots of pictures
I was using this book more as a costume history reference than as a book on art history, so I won't comment on the coverage of art history. However, as a costume reference it is extremely good. The book is very well illustrated with pictures of people, and includes many pictures not shown in "costume books." Worthwhile, if you are seriously interested in the period.

Pioneering approach to protection of over 300 species
The Northern Rockies Ecosystem Protection Act (NREPA) was developed in response to federal government spending on land management that was jeopardizing the existence of numerous species in the Rocky Mountain region from Yellowstone to Glacier National Parks. It quickly gained the support of over 800 independent businesses, conservation groups, and Native American religious groups.

NREPA has earned bipartisan political support. Members of both major political parties are sponsors who have introduced NREPA in the US House of Representatives. Former president Jimmy Carter has endorsed it. So has political columnist James Kilpatrick, and Pulitzer prize-winning poet Gary Snyder. Numerous scientists including the Craighead family, famed for its grizzly bear research, support NREPA for its promising potential to cut risk of extinction of the grizzly bears of Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks.

Despite bipartisan political support and scientific support for NREPA, political opposition from wealthy industries has stalled its passage through Congress. The oil-gas, mining, logging, and motorsports industries want access to the acreage that NREPA would protect for a wide variety of other economic and environmental purposes. But a growing base of support across America is putting pressure on politicians to listen to the grassroots instead of the mighty lobbyists. Wilderness and many species of wildlife are rare in America nowadays, and NREPA will make sure they don't disappear. This is an excellent piece of wildlife legislation, and an example of how pioneering legislation of this kind should be written.
